SEO for accountants in Sydney
By Tom Galland · Updated
Most accounting firms and tax agents in Sydney get their best clients from referrals, and that won't change. SEO is for the people who don't have a referral: the new business owner who needs a BAS agent, the property investor with three rentals, the family that's done their own return for years and wants it off their plate.
Those people search at predictable times of year, for specific services, in specific suburbs. We build your site so it's the one they find when they do.

Very few people search for "accounting firm Sydney". They search for the job they need done and where they are. Each of these needs its own page, because Google won't rank a general services page for all of them.
| Search | What they want | Page that should rank |
|---|---|---|
| tax accountant Bondi Junction | An individual who wants their return done nearby | Suburb page for your office, plus your Google Business Profile |
| small business accountant Sydney | A business owner looking for ongoing compliance and advice | Business accounting service page |
| BAS agent near me | A sole trader or small business behind on their BAS | BAS and bookkeeping page |
| SMSF accountant | Trustees looking for a specialist, often outside their suburb | SMSF page written for trustees, not for other accountants |
| rental property tax return accountant | Investors wanting depreciation and deductions handled properly | Property investor page |
| accountant for tradies | Tradies who want someone who knows their deductions and cash flow | Industry page |
Most of these are local searches, so your Google Business Profile matters as much as your website. Specialist work like SMSF and crypto tax is searched more widely, so those pages can win clients well outside your area.
A page that lists tax, BAS, SMSF, bookkeeping and advisory in one block won't rank well for any of them. Someone searching "SMSF accountant" wants to land on a page about SMSFs, written for trustees.
Demand builds through May and June and peaks in the lodgment season. If the pages go up in July, they haven't had time to rank. The 31 October deadline is also when people who lodge themselves realise they've left it late and start looking for an agent.
Wrong primary category, no services listed, few recent reviews. For "accountant near me" searches, the map results often decide who gets the call before anyone sees a website.
Clients are handing over their financial details. Registration numbers, real staff bios and a clear explanation of fees do more for enquiries than another stock photo of a calculator.
Individual returns and business clients need different pages, different keywords and a different tone. We start by agreeing which work is worth chasing, so we're not building traffic you'd rather not have.
Separate pages for individual tax, business tax, BAS, bookkeeping, SMSF and the industries you know well. Each one answers the questions that client type asks before they book.
The right categories (Accountant, Tax preparation service, Bookkeeping service and so on), your services listed, consistent details across directories, and a simple process for asking happy clients for reviews.
EOFY and tax time pages go live in May, not July. Off-season, we focus on business advisory, structuring and the questions business owners ask when they're planning ahead.
TPB registration, CPA or CA membership where it applies, and staff bios that say who does the work. This is what makes a stranger comfortable sending you their tax file number.
Where your office is changes which searches you can win. We start with the suburbs around you, where the competition is weakest and the map results matter most, then work outwards.
Where we're based. Searches like "accountant Bondi Junction" and "tax accountant Randwick" are mostly decided by the map results, so your Google Business Profile and reviews do a lot of the work.
The hardest area to rank in, because the large firms all compete for it. Small firms usually do better with business-type pages, like accountants for consultants or medical practices, than with "accountant Sydney CBD".
A big small business market with plenty of tradies, retailers and family businesses. Industry pages and suburb pages tend to work well here.
Strong demand for individual returns, investment property and SMSF work. Specialist pages can pull clients from across these areas, not just your own suburb.
Accountants have more marketing rules than most businesses. We write your pages with these in mind, and we'll tell you if something on your current site needs a second look.
The Tax Agent Services Act makes it a civil penalty to advertise tax agent or BAS agent services, or to claim to be registered, if you're not. Anyone in the firm offering these services needs to be covered by a registration.
Tax Agent Services Act 2009If you use the Registered tax practitioner symbol, the TPB's guidelines say to show your registration number with it, so clients can check you on the public register.

CA ANZ practice structuresThe ACCC says you can't post fake reviews, hide negative ones, or offer a reward only for good ones. Asking every client for an honest review is fine and works well.

A handful of the right listings beats hundreds of junk directories. For accounting firms, these are the ones that count.

Local SEO starts at $599 a month, month to month, with no lock-in. Most firms see movement on suburb and service searches within three to six months. Competitive terms across all of Sydney take longer. If you want to be ready for next tax time, the best time to start is the year before.
See our SEO packagesReferrals will probably stay your best source. SEO is for the people who don't have one, and it also helps referrals convert: most people look you up before they call, even when a friend has recommended you. If your site doesn't hold up, some of those referrals go elsewhere.
Whichever work you want more of. They search differently and need different pages. Many firms want more business clients and fewer one-off returns, in which case we put most of the effort into business, BAS and advisory pages.
Ideally six to nine months before. Pages need time to be found and to rank, so tax time pages should be live by May. Starting in July usually means the benefit arrives the following year.
Yes, if you want to be found for them. Each service is a different search with a different person behind it. A trustee looking for SMSF help wants a page about SMSFs, not a list of everything the firm does.
Yes, as long as they're genuine and you're not filtering out the bad ones. The ACCC's guidance on online reviews sets out what's allowed. Your Google reviews are the ones that matter most for local searches.
Suburb and service searches usually start moving in three to six months. Broad terms like "accountant Sydney" are much more competitive and can take a year or more. We'll tell you up front which ones are realistic for your site.
